I came to serious art rather late in life, near the end of a career in business. While I had sketched and painted since childhood, it was not until I discovered sculpture about fifteen years ago that I began to exhibit and sell my work. What was once a diversion has become a passion.
My sculpture subjects derive from a variety of sources—images that I encounter on the street, in newspapers, in creeks and marshes, and simply from my imagination. Aside from a rough division between human figures and wildlife, my sculptures don’t lend themselves to categorization—I sculpt what appeals to me and moves me. Some of my work is whimsical, like “Robert Rauschenberg Contemplates Sor Aqua”, and some is serious, like “Anne Ascending”.
My paintings are inspired by the play of light, shadow and reflection. I am influenced by Vermeer and Hopper, both extraordinary painters of light. My first solo exhibition of paintings featured interiors, with lamps as the light source. I then moved outside to paint the nighttime cityscape. My most recent exhibition explored the tidal flats of Maine, Virginia and South Carolina. Here, I was interested in the reflection of light on water, sand and even mud.
My work is realistic. While I love abstract art, I don’t have an abstract mind when it comes to making art. I depict what I see, whether from life or imagination.
